Dolls Collecting

Dolls have been loved by children for centuries. No one knows when dolls were first made. But it is known that primitive people used dolls as religious or magical objects before dolls were toys. Today, collecting dolls is a hobby that adults and children share.

Dolls thousand of years old have been found in Egyptian tombs. Some were made of baked clay; others were brightly painted wooden dolls, with with long hair made of strings of clay beads. In the ancient city of Cyrene, in North Africa, dolls of carved ivory have been found. Early Greek and Roman books mention wax dolls. However, none of these old wax dolls can be seen today. They have all been destroyed or have melted away.
